• Joined NINDS as an Investigator in 1999, was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering in 2000 and was promoted to Senior Investigator in 2007. Dr. Diamond’s work embraces high-risk/high-reward; he focuses on how synapses, neurons, and specific neural circuits compute, encode and transmit information. The model system for this work is the mammalian (rodent) retina which is unique in allowing measurement of neural responses to natural sensory input (light) in a functional network. The laboratory uses core techniques of patch-clamp electrophysiology and imaging, combined with transgenic mice, optogenetics, imaging of activity dependent indicators (e.g., calcium) using 2-photon microscopy, pharmacological approaches, and analysis of high-resolution electron microscopic data (connectomics).
• Awards received include an NIH Individual National Research Service Award (1996-1998) and Burroughs Welcome Fund Career Award in the Biomedical Sciences (1998-2003).  Dr. Diamond received the 2022 Brian Boycott Award for career achievement in retinal neurobiology.
