There are two types of scientific careers at the NIH - scientific administrative and scientist-researcher positions.
- Scientific administration are positions outside the lab. Responsibilities may include administering grants for research, managing science programs, and advising on cutting edge resources. Visit the Scientific Administrators page to learn more.
- Scientists-research are positions that may involve lab work and/or direct patient care activities. Positions include nurses, physicians, data scientists, and clinical and basic researchers.
Additionally, the NIH supports the next generation of scientists. We fund thousands of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows across the United States. Visit Scientific Fellowships and Trainees to learn more.
Criteria for posting a scientific position
The position must be a scientific, research, or scientific/administrator position within the respective IC. Positions are not Title 5 (GS) appointments advertised on USA Jobs but rather specialized scientific positions filled through other mechanisms like Title 42(f) or (g), and the Senior Biomedical Research and Biomedical Product Assessment Service (SBRBPAS). Examples of such positions include Staff Scientist, Senior Investigator, and SBRBPAS Scientist.
If you have a scientific position at the NIH that you would like advertised on this page or would like further information, please contact the Corporate Recruitment Unit.
