Waitlisted Registration—What Does it Mean?

Pondering Woman

I registered for a class and was placed on the waitlist—is the class full?

If you have registered for a class at the NIH Training Center (NIHTC), you may be familiar with the registration process. But we get it…it may not be as clear for first-time students, so here’s a breakdown:

Step 1

All registrations are initially sent to the waitlist

The NIHTC uses a two-level approval process. Until those approvals are complete, your registration will remain on the waitlist.

Step 2

Registration pending direct supervisor’s approval

Your direct supervisor will receive a notification that your registration is pending their approval. They approve in the LMS.

Step 3

Registration pending final approver’s CAN entry and approval

Your final approver will receive a notification that your registration is pending their approval. They should approve and enter the CAN for billing in the LMS.

Step 4

Registration confirmed if there is space in the class

If there is space in the class, your registration will move to a confirmed status on the class roster. If the class is full, your registration will remain on the waitlist. Your waitlisted registration may be moved to the roster if someone drops the class.

So how do I know if a class is actually full?

You can always reach out to NIHTrainingCenter@nih.gov with questions about NIHTC classes. You will be directed to the program manager or training coordinator who manages the class logistics and can provide more information about the number of available seats. You can also follow these tips when registering for classes:

  1. Register at least four weeks prior to the class—some of our classes fill quickly!
  2. Ensure your request for registration receives prompt approvals.

Visit our Course Registration website for more information about the registration process and what to expect. Browse the course calendar or course catalog for upcoming classes.
