Another Successful Management Seminar Series

The NIHTC recently completed the 2024 Management Seminar Series (MSS). Over 250 participants from 21 ICs participated in FY24. The MSS schedule included six two-hour monthly seminars created and facilitated by MSS Coordinators and Advisors who are former MSS participants, NIH Management Interns, and Presidential Management Fellows. Seminar topics included Time Management and Prioritization; Giving, Receiving, and Using Feedback; Breaking Out of Your Comfort Zone; How to Create and Lead Groups to Enhance the DEI Mission; Developing Your Personal Brand; and Leading in a Remote Workplace.

Shift workers participated in MSS this year and we continue to expand the inclusiveness of this program into FY25.

FY25 MSS Slots

The MSS is a foundational building block for career development and cross-IC networking at NIH for GS 7-13 non-supervisory employees. If you or a member of your team are looking for a program to expand your engagement with other NIH professionals, check out this program. Your IC Executive Officer (EO) will receive the call for nominations in mid-October.

Visit the MSS website for more information or contact Rick Hawkins with questions.

Attention Supervisors: Have You Obtained 16 Supervisory CLPs?

CLPs

We are nearing the end of the last year of the NIH three-year supervisory refresher training cycle (2022/2023/2024). New supervisors are required to fulfill initial training requirements within 12 months of their new role as a supervisor. After a supervisor’s first year, 16 hours of refresher training is required every three years. Refresher training must, at a minimum, cover these four OPM topic areas:

  • Actions, options, and strategies addressing unacceptable performance
  • Mentoring employees
  • Employee performance improvement and productivity
  • Conducting employee performance appraisals

While the above topic areas are mandatory, there’s no specific time requirement per topic, just the 16-hour requirement total. In addition, experienced supervisors can certainly take supervisory trainings outside of the above areas, as long as each of the areas above is covered as well.

The NIHTC is here to provide experienced supervisors with an option to fulfill their refresher training requirements before the December 31, 2024 deadline. Take our two-day Supervisory Refresher class to cover all the required topics at once. The Supervisory Refresher course has two sessions in FY25 Q1. The tentative dates are November 12-13 and consecutive Wednesdays on December 11 and 18. This impressive class not only meets OPM requirements, but also offers valuable content led by an engaging instructor who is highly regarded by participants. Topics include Applied Emotional Intelligence, Employee Relations, Managing Performance, Managing Remote Workers, Managing Change, and Work and Life Balance.

There will be a data call for all experienced supervisors to record their supervisory refresher activities and hours completed from January 1, 2022-December 31, 2024. IC Mandatory Training Coordinators will receive the call in early 2025 and reach out to supervisors for their data. Check out the Supervisor Refresher Training Data Call Frequently Asked Questions for more information.

Visit the Supervisory Training website to learn more about refresher training options and the Supervisory Refresher page to register for upcoming offerings.

We’re Listening…

We Need Your Feedback

At the NIHTC, your feedback about our training is important. We are thrilled to receive outstanding reviews, but we are just as interested in improving training if we’ve missed the mark. The NIHTC is keenly aware of survey fatigue at NIH, and beginning in November, get ready to receive a streamlined class feedback form.

Take a sneak peek at the questions:

  • Did you find the instructor responsive to you?
  • How would you rate your overall training experience?
  • What new skills were you hoping to gain from this training?
  • Share one concept from the training you will apply immediately.
  • Would you recommend that this training be delivered using an in-person or virtual format?

Of course, you don’t have to wait to take a class to provide feedback. Ask questions or provide feedback on how we're doing overall through our general webform or reach out to NIHTrainingCenter@nih.gov.
