Professional Accomplishments
- Known for elucidating the contribution of oxidant stress to the mechanism of action and cardiac toxicity of the anthracycline antibiotics and other classes of anticancer
- Discovered glutathione peroxidase 2 which plays an essential role in protecting gastrointestinal crypt cells from peroxidative injury
- Developed the role of “Phase 0” pharmacodynamic clinical trials in cancer drug discovery
- Led the National Cancer Institute’s ten year effort to comprehensively restructure its clinical trials enterprise
