Colleagues,
Please join me in celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the NIH Leave Bank program!
In 2014, the Office of Human Resources launched the NIH Leave Bank, a novel leave sharing program designed to provide paid leave to its members from a pooled fund of donated and restored leave when they have exhausted all other paid leave and cannot work due to a personal or family medical emergency. The Leave Bank acts an insurance policy, offering support, security, and peace of mind to its members experiencing a medical emergency.
Today, there are over 12,000 members (including myself!) representing 62% of the eligible NIH community. The program has distributed nearly 800,000 hours of paid leave to 1,850 recipients over the past 10 years helping its members through life events such as medical emergencies, birth/adoptions of new family members, and family caregiving. These success stories demonstrate the program’s positive impact on its membership and the NIH community.
In celebration of a decade of service to the NIH workforce, I would like to extend a sincere Thank You to all who have ensured the program’s success, including the NIH Leave Bank Office staff, current and former NIH Leave Bank Board members, and most importantly, the NIH community for their membership, leave donations, and support of the program.
If you are interested in becoming a Leave Bank member, donating your unused leave, or would like to learn more about the NIH Leave Bank, please reach out to LeaveBank@od.nih.gov or visit the NIH Leave Bank website.
With Gratitude,
Julie Broussard Berko, MPA
Director, Office of Human Resources
