NIH Leadership and Career Development Program Updates

In the last edition of Highlights, we provided a look-ahead for the planned nomination periods for NIH Leadership and Career Development Programs. We’re here to keep you in the know about the status of each program’s call for nominations.

Management Seminar Series (MSS)

Nomination Period: The call for nominations for the 2024 MSS is available in October. Each IC has an internal process for nominations. Please discuss with your supervisor if you would like to be nominated for the MSS.  

Program Structure: The 2024 MSS consists of seven 2-hour seminars, breakout group sessions, and networking events from February through August 2024. An overview of the seminar topics and dates will be available on the MSS website in mid-October. 

Target Audience: NIH employees at the GS-7–12 levels, NIH Management Interns, Presidential Management Fellows, and non-supervisory GS-13 NIH employees.

NIH Senior Leadership Program (SLP)

Nomination Period: The 2024 SLP call for nominations is currently open until November 3, 2023.

Program Structure: Four to five-month program with a blended delivery format (a mixture of fully virtual or fully in-person sessions). Visit the SLP website for 2024 session details. 

Target Audience: GS-14/15, SES, and equivalent leaders.

NIH Mid-Level Leadership Program (MLP)

Nomination Period: The initial call for nominations went out in late August with final IC nominations due on October 4, 2023. The NIHTC is planning a second call for nominations in March 2024 for up to four more series to begin in May and June. 

Program Structure: The MLP series is offered as either entirely virtual or in a blended delivery format (a mixture of fully virtual or fully in-person day sessions). Visit the MLP website for details.

Target Audience: GS-12, 13, 14, and equivalent leaders.

NIH Executive Leadership Program (ExLP)

Nomination Period: Recruitment for the 2024-2025 session will begin January 2024 and the program will be launched next summer. Monitor the ExLP website for updates.

Program Structure: Seven-month program offered every other fiscal year. 

Target Audience: Aspiring or existing “Top 6” leaders at NIH (GS-15, SES, and equivalent leaders).
