Applicants with Disabilities
Federal guidelines allow individuals with documented disabilities, whether intellectual, severe physical, or psychiatric, to apply for Federal Government jobs. However, this doesn't guarantee a job. You still need to meet job qualifications, go through the selection, and satisfy other requirements like background checks.
If applying to an announcement directly, the announcement must be accepting applications from outside of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). In other words, the announcement should be available to individuals from outside of HHS.
Eligibility requirements:
- Documented disability.
- Ability to perform job tasks, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Required documents:
- Proof of your disability from a licensed medical professional, vocational rehabilitation specialist, or an agency that provides disability benefits (e.g., State Division of Rehabilitation Services, Social Security Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs). The letter should be on official letterhead and signed.
- All documents must be submitted by the job announcement's closing date.
For job opportunities outside the standard application process, see OPM's Schedule A Hiring Authority.
If you're selected for a position, HHS policy requires that we verify the authenticity of your Schedule A letter. A Human Resources Specialist will contact the provider of your letter before making an official job offer.
