Our Hiring Process

NIH offers unparalleled opportunities to take a leap and discover what’s next for your career.

One thing we’ve learned while helping to heal the world is that compassionate and caring people are our lifeline at the NIH. We’re looking for driven and inspired people to join our team. We’re looking for YOU! The NIH’s hiring process includes an online application and one or more interviews. This guide helps outline the basic steps of the process.

  1. View available positions

See Open Positions or search for your desired position. Once you’ve found a job you are interested in, follow the Apply on USAJobs link and submit your application through USAJobs. For other jobs, follow the How to Apply instructions for submitting your application.

  2. Carefully follow application instructions

Each job announcement contains guidance on how to apply. Pay close attention to any Conditions of Employment, Qualifications, and Required Documentation. Additionally, complete any required assessment questionnaire— more information can be found in each job posting's How to Apply section.

  3. Submit all materials on time

Your application must be submitted by midnight Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement. Reference the How to Apply section for instructions and the deadline specific to your application. Some applications may close after a set number of applications are received instead of their closing date.

  4. Check your application status

The Office of Human Resources will evaluate your application against the qualifications and job duties of the position. Status updates will be posted to USAJobs.

  5. Interview with NIH

The hiring manager will contact the best-qualified applicants for an interview. Additionally, any required background investigations or reference checks will be performed.

  6. Look for notifications

After interviews have been conducted, the selected applicant will receive an offer. Status updates will be posted to USAJobs or e-mailed directly to the applicant.

  7. What to expect next

The length of the hiring process may differ based on the type of position, the number of applicants, and other variables. The hiring process can take several weeks to several months. If you have specific inquiries about your application, refer to the job announcement and utilize one of the agency contact methods. If the announcement was posted on USAJobs, include the job Announcement numberand Control number.
