Summary

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) conducts and supports clinical research and clinical research training and disseminates science-based information on diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases, digestive diseases, nutritional disorders, obesity, kidney diseases, and hematologic disorders, for the purpose of improving people’s health and quality of life.

This position is located within the Phoenix Epidemiology and Clinical Research Branch (PECRB) whose mission is to investigate the etiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity in humans. Researchers in the Branch use clinical physiologic, genomic and epidemiologic approaches to determine the causes of these diseases. The Clinical Medical Officer would work within the Obesity and Diabetes Clinical Research Section (ODCRS) which conducts both inpatient and outpatient clinical studies. The studies in ODCRS are diverse, bringing together scientists with different expertise including nutrition, psychology, clinical physiology and bioengineering to collaborate and apply the latest techniques to investigate the physiologic and behavioral etiologies of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Professional knowledge of and skill in applying, concepts, principles and methodology of the field sufficient to apply experimental theories and new developments to the solution of complex biomedical research problems or to make decisions or recommendations to changing programs. Investigators with the appropriate medical training and interest are encouraged to apply to work in the ODCRS to develop new ideas and clinical studies which may lead to an improved understanding of weight gain and loss and/or glucose metabolism, to ultimately identify novel methods to prevent and treat obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The position requires a Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited medical school, and Board Certification in Internal Medicine. A current U.S license to practice medicine is also required. Or completion of a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to a accredited schools in the United States that was demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECGMG). Or qualify for this position because successfully completed premedical education in the United States AND graduate education from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States that was demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Or qualify for this position because successfully completed the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
