Summary

The Animal Facility Specialist plays a critical role in supporting the daily operations of the NIEHS animal facility. This position offers the opportunity to oversee facility operations, develop and improve standard operating procedures, and collaborate closely with investigators to support groundbreaking research. Duties

The incumbent is responsible for planning, prioritizing, and carrying out work, which include: Using sound facility management principles, organizes, plans, analyzes, and coordinating activities to satisfy the needs of investigators and the goals and priorities of the Branch. Participating in developing husbandry procedures for each species of animal maintained in the facility. As a facility point of contact for husbandry related requests, inquiries, and problems, interacting with in-house and outside professional and lay personnel. Ensuring adequate inventory control and maintenance of animal husbandry equipment and supplies and implementing and overseeing inventory control procedures. Contributing to the evaluation of animal colony husbandry practices and recommending new procedures to ensure animals are maintained under proper environmental conditions, are provided a nutritionally adequate diet, and are handled in a humane manner. Participating in evaluating husbandry practices required to maintain high standards of animal care. Participating in projecting, procuring, and managing equipment, supplies, repairs, and maintenance services for the facility, including the procurement of feed and bedding. Ensuring that supplies are readily available and maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies necessary to support the research efforts in the facility. Serving as Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) on a variety of NIEHS animal care research support contracts. Taking all required training to achieve and maintain COR Status.
