Summary

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is recruiting for a Tenure-Track Investigator to direct innovative research within its Intramural Research Program (IRP). The goal of this search is to identify a candidate who will enhance the development of novel and cutting-edge community-engaged research aligned with National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) five complementary and synergistic scientific research priorities: Optimizing Health for All - Optimize health for all by addressing differences in distribution of health and disease; Addressing the conditions of Daily Life - Identify effective approaches to improve health and well-being by addressing the conditions in which people are born, grow, learn, work, play, live, and age; Addressing the Distribution of Health - Identify and address pressing health challenges within and across populations and communities; Preventing and Managing Disease - Intervene at multiple levels to prevent and manage chronic and other diseases to promote health; and, Advancing Systems to Optimize Care - Address the holistic needs of individuals, families, and communities through effective clinical and organizational solutions that leverage nursing research to optimize care delivery.

NINR is leading research to address pressing health challenges and inform practice and policy, optimizing health and advancing health for all. NINR uses nursing’s holistic perspective—considering individuals’ health, behaviors, and social and environmental contexts—to advance science and identify practice and policy solutions across clinical and community settings that address the realities of people’s lives and living conditions. NINR is moving in exciting new directions, and the investigator will play a role in shaping these developments. An approach that integrates health determinants—conditions of daily living at multiple levels and across communities—is anticipated for the Division of Intramural Research (DIR), emphasizing community, health services, and translational research. DIR offers a unique opportunity for longitudinal research through the development and maintenance of long-term community-engaged research partnerships. These partnerships support prospective interventions and evaluations of their impact on people’s health over time, including policy, programmatic, and environmental changes. DIR’s research encompasses disease prevention and health promotion. Maximizing collaboration across DIR and maintaining a transdisciplinary approach, with nursing’s perspective at the forefront, are critical to advancing health.

Duties

The principal investigator is a key member of NINR’s DIR. By involving aspiring and new scientists in this research, DIR will strengthen the scientific workforce prepared to advance and support community-engaged nursing research that addresses the conditions of people’s lives.

The investigator will lead research that supports the overall mission of NINR and DIR and will be responsible for managing available resources, including the operating budget, human resources, and space. NINR will provide adequate laboratory and office space to support a rigorous research program at its Bethesda, Maryland campus. The development and implementation of community-engaged interventions aimed at improving healthcare and practice are highly valued for this position.
