Summary

The Systems Toxicology Branch (STB) within the Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), is recruiting a Staff Scientist 1 with expertise in cardiotoxicology and the environmental determinants of cardiovascular health. Research in STB is project-driven and supports interdisciplinary teams working to advance DTT's mission. Branch scientists develop and conduct research initiatives that address key questions in toxicology by generating, evaluating, and communicating high-quality data to support public health decision-making.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative research environment and contribute to DTT's efforts to advance toxicology and environmental public health. This work includes supporting applied research to generate data, improve testing approaches, evaluate emerging methods, and enhance interpretation of toxicity studies across multiple organ systems.

Duties

The Staff Scientist will:

• Design, develop, and evaluate research related to cardiotoxicity and the effects of environmental exposures on cardiovascular health.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design, oversee, analyze, and communicate findings from in vivo and in vitro studies conducted primarily through contract laboratories, with a focus on cardiovascular effects associated with priority environmental chemical and nonchemical stressors.
• Monitor advances in in silico, in vitro, and in vivo approaches for evaluating cardiotoxicity and contribute to the development and implementation of new DTT testing capabilities.
• Serve as a subject matter expert in cardiotoxicology, providing scientific guidance on study design, data interpretation, and emerging methodologies.
• Contribute to the dissemination of DTT research through peer-reviewed publications, government reports, scientific presentations, and other technical communications.

As a NIH Title 42(g) Staff Scientist 1, the employee is generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources as a principal investigator, although they will often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the branch.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in Toxicology or a related field.
• Minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral experience with research, leadership, and training necessary to independently design and lead research programs investigating effects on cardiovascular health from exposure to environmental substances of public health concern conducted through contract laboratories.
• Recognition as a scientifically active and respected expert (e.g., as evidenced by honors, awards, board certification, invited presentations and consultations, elected positions in professional societies, invited reviewer for journals, publications).
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills demonstrated in a team environment
• Ability to innovate and work in a team-based, collaborative, and multi-disciplinary organization; and Ability to provide advice and consultation to both technical and nontechnical personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with both in vivo and in vitro cardiotoxicity testing methods and knowledge of cardiotoxicity biomarkers.

Appointee may be a US citizen, Legal Permanent Resident of non-US citizen who is eligible for a valid work authorization.

This position is subject to background investigation.
