Job Summary

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Deputy Director to assist in providing leadership to one of the preeminent organizations in the world for aging research.  The NIA leads a national scientific effort to understand the nature of aging and the conditions associated with growing older in order to extend the healthy, active years of life. The NIA is also the primary federal agency supporting and conducting Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias research.  The Institute’s mission is achieved through the supporting and conducting of research on aging, identifying strategies and treatments to effectively prevent, delay or slow age-related diseases, fostering the development of research and clinician scientists in aging, and disseminating information about aging and advances in research to the public, health care professionals and the scientific community.  To carry out its mission, the NIA has an annual budget of approximately $3.9 billion for FY21 and a total staff of approximately 1,280 members, including 530 full-time equivalents (FTEs) and 750 non-FTEs.  The Deputy Director serves as the second-in-command in providing strategic leadership and oversight for all aspects and components of the Institute.

This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to assist the Director in implementing the Institute’s strategic plan, managing daily operations and serving as a champion and guarantor of the intellectual and administrative environment at the Institute.   As an Institute leader, the Deputy Director will serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for the NIA in collaborating with organizations across the nation and worldwide to incorporate the views and needs of stakeholders to advance the NIA mission. The Deputy Director will also facilitate the identification and development of current and future leaders and serve as a role model in managing staff and financial resources with integrity and fairness and ensuring compliance with Institute and federal policies and priorities.

Required Qualifications

The NIA seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, vision and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse organization.  Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D. and have senior-level research experience and knowledge of research programs in one or more scientific areas related to aging research.  They should be recognized and respected within their profession, both nationally and internationally, as individuals of outstanding scientific competence.  Applicants must have demonstrated ability in setting, planning, implementing and analyzing program objectives and priorities.  Candidates should have the demonstrated ability to manage financial and human resources, mentoring and lead a research program involving extensive internal and external collaboration.

Vaccination Mandate

In accordance with Executive Order 14043, Federal employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee’s duty location or work arrangement (e.g., telework, remote work, etc.), subject to exceptions that may be required by law. If selected, you will be required to submit proof of vaccination by November 22, 2021 or before your entrance on duty if you are selected after the compliance date. Your HR Consultant will provide a list of documents acceptable as proof of vaccination and instructions for how to submit a request for a legally required exception, if needed, to comply with vaccination requirement.


The Deputy Director, NIA, will be appointed at a salary commensurate with the selectee’s qualifications and experience.  A full federal benefits package including leave, health and life insurance, long term care insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401K equivalent), will be provided. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid.

Expanded/Maximum Telework Posture

Due to COVID-19, the agency is currently in a maximum telework posture.  If selected, you may be expected to telework upon your appointment. As employees are permitted to return to the office, you may be required to report to the duty station listed on this announcement within 30 calendar days of receiving notice to do so, even if your home/temporary telework site is located outside the local commuting area. Your position may be eligible for workplace flexibilities which may include remote work or telework options, and/or flexible work scheduling. These flexibilities may be requested in accordance with the HHS Workplace Flexibilities policy.
