Professional Accomplishments:

Dr. Bertagnolli’s research examined tumor biology with the goal of developing more effective, patient-specific cancer prevention and treatment strategies. Her basic research investigated APC gene function, an activity regulating many tumor types, particularly colorectal cancer (CRC).
Dr. Bertagnolli led a multinational trial showing that a selective Cox-2 inhibitor, celecoxib, prevented adenomas in patients at risk for CRC. This study also found increased cardiovascular complications among celecoxib users, raising a concern for routine use of these drugs for both cancer prevention and arthritis.
Dr. Bertagnolli was one of the organizing members of gastrointestinal correlative science initiatives within the NCI-funded Cancer Cooperative Groups. She also served as the President of the Alliance Foundation and Chief Executive Officer of Alliance Foundation Trials, LLC, a not-for-profit corporation that conducts international cancer clinical trials.
Dr. Bertagnolli was the 2018-2019 President and 2018-2021 Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and was recently elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Medicine.
While practicing, Dr. Bertagnolli managed duodenal and biliary malignancies, complex colorectal cases, and visceral and retroperitoneal sarcomas in close collaboration with colleagues in medical oncology, radiation oncology, and pathology Dr. Bertagnolli’s clinical focus was the treatment of patients with germline APC gene mutations, a condition known as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP).
