The Open Enrollment period for the NIH Leave Bank is currently underway and will end on December 10, 2018. The Leave Bank acts as an insurance policy for your pay check if you experience a medical condition and is a great way to help others, like this actual Leave Bank recipient:
“Thanks to the generosity of my fellow employees and the Leave Bank, I was able to undergo a complicated stem cell transplant, hospitalization, and very lengthy confinement without loss of pay. It was wonderful to be able to focus on my healing and not have to worry about the mortgage and utilities being paid or having food in the house.
I strongly suggest that all employees participate in the Leave Bank. Your buy-in is low and the return is incredible. No one can predict when emergencies and illnesses may strike. The Leave Bank is great insurance to protect your income and give you peace of mind when you need it most”. - NIH Leave Bank Recipient
The Leave Bank is a pooled bank of donated annual and restored leave available to eligible members. It offers income protection and amounts to paid leave for members who have exhausted all of their leave and are affected by a personal or family medical condition.
Enrollment in the Leave Bank is open to all NIH Federal employees. The membership period will begin on January 6, 2019. To elect to become a 2019-member, log into ITAS during Open Enrollment and select “Leave Bank Membership.” If you are currently a 2018 Leave Bank member, your membership will automatically continue into 2019, unless you take action in ITAS during Open Enrollment to opt-out. For each membership year, there is a membership contribution requirement. The annual membership contribution is one pay period’s worth of annual leave accrual (i.e. 4, 6 or 8 hours). The membership contribution will automatically be waived if you lack sufficient leave to make the membership contribution.
Would you like the opportunity to help a fellow NIH employee? Donate your “Use or Donate” leave to the NIH Leave Bank! Last year, NIH employees lost over 75,000 hours of annual leave. Don’t let your leave go to waste! Please donate your excess annual leave to the Leave Bank by January, 5 2019!
